The first invention: money.
Before money, cooperation rarely traveled beyond trust: your family, your village, the people who could vouch for you.
Money changed that. It allowed strangers to cooperate without needing to trust one another personally. A farmer could trade with a smith two valleys away. A merchant could cross an ocean and find that value still meant something on the other side.
That change built everything that followed. Cities, trade routes, science, companies, the internet: all depend on people who do not know one another working together at scale.
Money shaped us, too. Price, debt, wages, ownership, a fair deal: ideas we invented so long ago that they now feel like instinct. Money became more than something we exchange. It became one of the clearest ways we express what we want, what something is worth to us, and where our limits lie.
And money never stopped evolving. Shells became coins. Coins became paper. Paper became numbers in a ledger. Then came the card, the wire, the app and the stablecoin, all within a single lifetime.
No other invention has enabled so many humans to cooperate.

The second: AI.
AI is not merely another tool waiting to be used. It can be given an objective, understand a situation, make a plan and take the next step.
Five years ago, it finished your sentence. Now it writes the brief, argues the case and books the flight. Next, it will hire, order, negotiate and pay.
Money changed how humans cooperate. AI changes who can participate.
For the first time, something other than a person or a company can make decisions within the economy. And it is moving through a curve that took money thousands of years in a handful of years.
But intelligence alone does not create agency. The ability to act does.
And in the world we have built, action eventually reaches money.

Now they meet.
An agent that can pay is an agent that can act in the world.
It can renew the subscription, pay the rent, hire the contractor, order the inventory, settle the invoice or call an API that charges by the request. It can carry an intention beyond the screen and turn it into something real.
That is the moment AI stops merely answering us and begins representing us.
It is also the moment trust becomes unavoidable.
Almost every conversation about AI is about control: how we keep it on a leash. But humans were never held together by a leash. We are held together by a shared way of saying what we want, what it is worth to us, and what we will not accept. That is money. It is the one language in which intent is expensive to fake, which is why a limit is not a fence around an agent. It is a sentence that it has to be bound by.
Every time money reached a new hand, the merchant, the bank, the card network, the app, we had to invent new ways to trust that hand. Ledgers. Signatures. Deposit insurance. Spending limits. Chargebacks.
The agent is the newest hand. It is the first one that can be talked into things.
An agent cannot be trusted simply because it is intelligent, helpful or well instructed. Instructions can be misunderstood. Context can be missing. Systems can be compromised. And an agent that sets its own limits is not safe.
The intelligence making the decision cannot also control the boundaries around it. A limit an agent can reason about is a limit it can reason away.
Those boundaries must belong to us humans.
