How it connects

How Genie connects to Mercury

Mercury issues API tokens from Settings → API Tokens, and the token’s kind decides what Genie can do. A Read Only token connects and reads. For payments, a Custom token with the Send Money with Approval scope lets Genie queue a payment in your Mercury dashboard, where an approver releases it. A Read and Write token can send at once, but Mercury honours it only from an IP allowlist.

Genie holds the read token and the spending token as separate credentials; the spending token is optional.

Before you start

What to have ready

  • A Genie account. Create one if you have not.
  • A Mercury role that may create API tokens, such as admin.

Step by step

Connect Mercury to Genie

  1. In Mercury, open Settings → API Tokens (app.mercury.com/settings/tokens) and choose Add new token.

  2. Read token: name it Genie read, choose Read Only, create it and copy it; Mercury shows it once.

  3. Sign in to Genie, open Account → Connections Vault and choose Add a connection. Choose Mercury.

  4. Paste the read token and choose Save. Genie verifies it with Mercury and shows Connected as your business’s name.

  5. Optional, for payments: create a second token, Genie spend, as Custom with the read scopes plus Send Money with Approval. No IP allowlist is needed for that.

  6. In Genie, choose Add a spending token on the Mercury connection, paste it and Save.

Once connected

What happens next

A payment from Genie appears in Mercury’s approval queue, and by default someone other than the token’s creator releases it. That dashboard approval is the control.

Mercury deletes tokens it has not seen for 45 days and narrows over-scoped ones, emailing admins a week ahead. An idle connection therefore shows Reconnect; mint a new token and add it.

To disconnect: Open the Mercury panel and choose Disconnect, and delete the tokens under Settings → API Tokens in Mercury.
